For
those of you who braved the elements between Tensleep Bowl and the top
of the course, you know just how cold and windy it truly was. We had a
dozen cases of cold-based distress ranging from frost nipped noses to
hypothermia requiring Ski Patrol intervention to severely frostbitten
fingers. To ALL the racers, full credit.
But
even more so, full credit to all the volunteers. While racers were out
and moving for a few hours, the volunteers were
standing there, in some cases all day, cheering you on and helping to
take care of you. Not only did the volunteers rub Dermatone on your
noses at transitions, shield you from the wind at the top and do it all
with a smile and encouragement, but they sat with you at the medical
clinic, gave you extra clothes and handwarmers, brought you warm drinks
and a dozen other stories I haven't heard yet. -8° with 40 mph wind at
the Tram? The volunteers stood out all day and helped all the racers
have a great race experience. The reason this race runs so smoothly on
race day is because I have the best volunteers of any race director
around.
How do I know this? Just take a look at this photo. -5° on the top of the Headwall? No big deal...my volunteers just dug themselves a snow cave.
In
short.... my volunteers kick ass.
